Frequently asked questions
KVM, Rackmount, Matrix & Extender Help
Still unsure what hardware fits your application?
Call SupportWhat exactly is an HDMI Matrix and when would I need one?
An HDMI matrix lets you switch multiple HDMI inputs, such as DVRs, Blu-ray players, computers, or media devices, to multiple displays or projectors. Any input can be routed to any output, or one input can be sent to all outputs.
Why would I use a DVI-D to VGA converter?
A DVI-D to VGA converter is needed when a system outputs digital DVI-D and the display accepts analog VGA. A passive adapter will not work for most DVI-D sources because active digital-to-analog conversion is required.
The rackmount monitor keyboard I purchased is too deep for my rack. What should I use?
Choose a shallow-depth or short-depth rackmount keyboard monitor. These are useful for limited-depth racks, 2-post racks, mobile environments, and space-constrained cabinets.
What is HDBaseT?
HDBaseT sends uncompressed HD video, audio, Ethernet, power, and control signals over standard Cat5e or Cat6 cabling for long-distance HDMI applications.
What does KVM mean?
KVM means keyboard, video, and mouse. KVM hardware lets one keyboard, monitor, and mouse control one or multiple computers or servers.
Is software required to use a KVM switch?
No. KVM switches are hardware solutions and are typically recognized by computers like standard keyboard, mouse, and video devices.
Do my servers have to be next to the KVM switch?
Standard KVM cables have distance limits, but KVM extenders and Cat5 KVM solutions can place servers farther from the console.
Why use a video splitter instead of a Y-cable?
A powered video splitter boosts and distributes video signals to multiple displays at full resolution. Y-cables can degrade image quality quickly as distance increases.
How far can I extend a DVI signal?
The distance depends on required resolution and extension method. Cat5e/Cat6 DVI extenders and fiber optic DVI extenders solve different distance and signal-quality requirements.
What is a rackmount monitor keyboard drawer?
It is a rack-mounted LCD display with integrated keyboard and touchpad or trackball. The drawer slides into the rack when not in use and saves space in server environments.
Do you sell rackmount monitor solutions for 2-post server racks?
Yes. Many rackmount keyboard monitor solutions are available with rail kits that support dual-post rack installation.
Can I connect an existing KVM switch to a KVMSwitchTech rackmount monitor keyboard combo?
Yes. Rackmount monitor keyboard drawers are commonly used with third-party KVM switches.
