HDMI vs VGA/DVI rackmount monitor

Buy native HDMI when the source is modern: servers with HDMI-out, media appliances, cameras, NVRs, and small-form-factor PCs. A native input avoids an adapter that adds a failure point inside a closed rack. Most legacy-line models here also carry DVI-D, BNC, and S-Video, and the RP-F and RP-X series pair HDMI 1.4 with VGA, so one screen can serve both new and old hosts during a migration. If the whole rack is still VGA/DVI, a dedicated VGA/DVI panel from the broader rackmount LCDs range costs less; if the rack is moving to 3840×2160 sources, step up to a 4K rackmount monitor instead.

1U drawer vs 7U–9U fixed panel

A 1U drawer (RP117, RP119, RP120, RP-F119, RP-F1417) slides out on rails and folds flat, so it costs one rack unit and is closed when nobody is working. That is the crash-cart replacement: pull it out, check the host, push it back. A fixed panel (6U–9U: RP-F617 through RP-X924) keeps the screen permanently visible at eye level, which is what monitoring walls, security rooms, and broadcast racks want. Panels are 1.9–2.8 inches thin but consume 6–9 rack units of face space; drawers hide in 1U but need 15.7–25.6 inches of rail depth behind the posts.

17" vs 19" vs 20"

17-inch models are the budget-and-density pick at 1280×1024, or 1920×1080 on the widescreen and RP-F builds. 19-inch is the sweet spot for most racks: same 1U or 7U–8U footprint, more readable at arm's length, up to 1920×1080 on the RP-F119 and RP-F719. Choose 20-inch (RP120, RP920) when you need 1600×1200 four-by-three real estate for consoles and logs, and the 24-inch RP-X924 or 18-inch RP-X719 when the application wants 1920×1200 WUXGA. Match the panel's native resolution to the host output; scaling a mismatched signal is what makes rack screens look soft.

Short-depth racks

Standard 1U drawers here need 20.9–25.6 inches of usable rail depth. In network cabinets, wall-mount enclosures, and OB vans, that space does not exist, so choose the purpose-built shallow units: the RP-F1417 runs 15.7 inches deep, and the RP1419-HDMI and the shallow 17" and 19" builds run 18.9 inches. Measure from the front post to the rear obstruction, subtract cable bend, and keep at least an inch of slack; HDMI plugs are shallower than BNC, but a drawer that cannot close is a drawer you bought twice.
